How to Use the Crime Data Map

Welcome to the Crime Data Visualization platform. This interactive map provides a graphical representation of crime data across different regions.

Navigating the Map

Zoom in and out using your mouse wheel. Click and drag the map to move around or click anywhere to focus in.

Applying Filters

For Police.uk incident data, use the dropdown menus in the left sidebar to filter by category or outcome status. Scotland uses its own official annual crime groups.

Understanding the Layers

Toggle between heatmap and count layers for street-level incident data. Scottish council statistics are shown as labelled aggregate markers instead of synthetic incident points.

Time Slider

Adjust the time slider to view monthly Police.uk, Dutch or Finnish data, final quarterly Danish data, annual French calendar-year data, or annual Scottish financial-year data. Animation is available for monthly incident data.

Legend

The legend at the bottom right correlates colors to crime categories, helping interpretation.

Coverage and privacy

The electoral-ward layer covers the whole UK. The statistical-area view combines England and Wales MSOAs, Northern Ireland 2021 Super Data Zones and Scottish 2022 Intermediate Zones. Police.uk street-crime analysis supports England, Wales and Northern Ireland; NI crime can be fetched by electoral ward or council, with council queries assembled from exact official DEA/ward coverage. Super Data Zones are reference-only. PSNI stop-and-search analysis is unavailable. Scotland is covered by official annual council-area aggregates, so its wards and Intermediate Zones are reference boundaries rather than crime-fetch areas.

Netherlands mode uses Politie monthly registered-offence aggregates supplied through CBS StatLine table 47022NED. English category translations are displayed first while the exact Dutch source terms remain visible alongside them. Its municipality, district and neighbourhood polygons are the official CBS/Kadaster Wijk- en Buurtkaart 2025 boundaries served through PDOK. Missing monthly category values mean “not published”, not zero, and the aggregates are not incident locations.

Finland mode uses monthly municipality aggregates from Statistics Finland PxWeb table 13it and official 2026 municipality boundaries. Recent months marked with an asterisk by the publisher are labelled preliminary. Missing values are not zero. The official 209-category taxonomy is hierarchical and overlapping, so the interface shows the selected category without inventing a “largest categories” ranking. These totals are not incident locations.

Denmark mode uses final calendar-quarter aggregates from Statistics Denmark StatBank table STRAF11 and 2026 Dataforsyningen boundaries. The 99 mapped local areas are Denmark’s 98 municipalities plus Christiansø. Quarterly figures are not revised, but Statistics Denmark says they are about 8% less complete than the later annual extract. They exclude Road Traffic Act offences, Greenland and the Faroe Islands and are not incident locations. The 91-category taxonomy is hierarchical and overlapping. A mandatory source note warns that the 2023 animal/hunting-law category is about 1,700 registrations too low; the July 2013 sexual-offence classification change also limits comparisons. Data and simplified boundaries are attributed under CC BY 4.0; details are included in the crime-data service privacy notice.

France mode uses the Ministry of the Interior SSMSI annual commune database for 2016–2025, restated onto the 1 January 2026 official geography, with matching IGN Admin Express COG boundaries. The 15 indicators use victims, offences, vehicles or people implicated as their counting unit, so the interface does not manufacture an “all crime” total or add indicator rows. Commune values withheld under the official low-count rule remain visibly not published. Rates are per 1,000 inhabitants except residential burglary, which is per 1,000 dwellings. Paris, Lyon and Marseille switch from parent-commune polygons to their municipal arrondissements when zoomed in; Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon is outside this SSMSI commune release.
